What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
It's a pair if custom Tantric LD 15s.
I may be able to snag the pair for a great price!
The fs is a little higher than I'd like, but the specs look nice!

I wouldn't worry too much about that Fs, unless you just want to play bass test discs. Everything else looks pretty good though

Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
I may be able to pick up a pair for around $300.
Tantric is looking to get some publicity in some SQ arenas.
I'm surprised at the specs though. Not too far from the SBP15 but with 20something mm Xmax and 46mm xmech.

That's what I'm thinking.
Here's a pic of the subs:

They're ugly! Lol
But I like that. There is absolutely no nonsense here. Strictly function over form.

Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
Well the great things about the Tantric subs will be, I can try before I buy and they will come with a fresh recone. One of them was being tried out as a burp sub.

Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
Hey, guys. First post here. Thought I'd chime in on these since they were built specifically for me.
The glue mess is because Tantric doesn't make the LD in a 15" normally. He had to use a sleeve to adapt a 2" coil/former to a 2.5" coil cone. That- and he always uses extra glue on my sub joints because I beat the ever lovin' snot out of my subs. As in... I burped these subs on a 10,000w amp.
The LD line is a 2" copper coil, "500w" sub. I know none of you care about "burp" numbers, but they're also capable of impressive output as seen in this video testing the 12" version in my CRX on ~ 1,200w.
http://youtu.be/i5oETN8uP48
These, as mentioned, are a special order item. The ones pictured are the only two in existence. But they look really good for IB use so Murph has agreed to make them if Fricasee likes them.
They're limited on stroke by the motor. The larger lines allow for more stroke and the next step up, the "MD" line steps it up another 10mm on the xmax, has a Qts of .6 but gives up some in the Le to ~ 2.3mH. And just as an aside, all Tantric subs are hand built by one person (the guy who designed all of them) right here in Louisiana using as many American parts as possible.
Anyway, not tryin to sell anything. Just offering a little insight.

Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
Thanks Taylor.
What would make a great video would be to show the sub playing free air. I'd like to see how much excursion it's capable of without any noise coming from the motor.

Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
Thermally capable of 1KW for how long?
-
Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
That's an excellent question. I'll have to get back to you on that.
I'm sure there are many factors that come into play. I was just going by the ampacity rating of the windings.
-
Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
I'm sorry, Chad. I misspoke. It's the MD's 2.5" coil that's capable of 1kw thermally. Although, the LD can take dynamic swings in that range.
My apologies. I shall edit that presently so as not to mislead.

TaylorFade,
Don't worry about it !
Fric will only be putting about 400 watts to em !

Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
responsive cone, light for the motor size.
any shorting ring/faraday work?
is the front plate thicker than it appears due to basket machining?
what is the mission for these middle pack, AE similar consumer target demographic?
-
Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
There's no shorting ring or Faraday work.
The top plate is 8mm thick. Nothing goes up into the basket.
I'm not aware of any "mission" with it. Especially since they didn't even exist a couple weeks ago. It's just his entry level driver that utilizes an energy flow specific pole motor similar to the SHD (which is the 4" coil, 5,000w rms monster).
-
Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
Hey Taylor, do any of the tantric subs implement that sort of technology?

-
Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
The SHD is the only one that I know of that utilizes a shorting ring. If the others don't, it's for a reason.
The upcoming "UHD" will also feature a shorting ring. But I'm sure no one on this board is interested in a 100lb cobalt motor. Lol.

Cobalt?!
That stuff will kill you.

I don't know why, but I spit a bit of drink and can totally relate with this statement.

Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
Permendur or Hiperco 50, or whatever, is the stuff used in Lowther drivers. Apparently the stuff is pretty pricey but it's the highest magnetic conductive stuff to make motors with.
using it in a stacked configuration like JBL's Everest or whatever, midranges, could achieve measurable advances in the "what's possible" department.
I would think blanks could be made from hydro-stamped mold that would keep the machining down, but the government has a market restriction on cobalt?
I hope neodymium drops from it's excessively priced import status, as China's the main supply..
-
Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
Till neo drops price, without mad tooling, ferrite is still king. Stacking sure looks cool, but the name of the game is putting a strong field in the gap.
And honestly, those putting "slug" after "slug" on the backside of a frame are not necessarily doing that.
There's a LOT of math involved in getting that gap symmetric and right (that's what she said) and these guys stacking magnets on ebay are not of the finest.
Some copper in the motor wold not hurt... AE and Fi seems to have the IB sub market cornered.... There are home users too.
Just sayin... The price point in production is kinda low due to the smaller motor........
-
Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
Not to derail the thread away from the LD or IB in general, but just wanted to touch on the cobalt thing.
I'm not sure if this is a "grade" of cobalt or a type or whatever, but I know its Sumarian cobalt and we've already tested a prototype in a radial design. The motor architecture isn't exactly new, but this is just the easiest way to make a radial motor and like I said, it was just to test materials.
Those are cobalt slugs up near the top of the structure. And let me tell you, the motor force is nothing to be trifled with. This thing was nasty.

Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
samarium cobalt, is a 28 MgOe or whatever, material
costly, they were used in the dome midranges of the Infinity polydome series
more powah than ferrite, but not as strong as neodymium.
there are natural structural dimensional criteria for magnetic substances, or substrate.
like, alnico likes a rod form factor, samarium cobalt I don't know, neodymium works well in blanks, I guess it matters how they sinter the material while it's being forged or baked.
it's funny stuff, how you can break a magnet and the piece that breaks off has a north and a south orientation...

So I take it that when you stack slugs you're really screwing up the drivers BL alignment?
Correct me if I'm not following.

Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
stacked slugs are only minimally adding to the motor force, the idea is that you have an easier time stacking slugs than making specialty motor parts out of low-carbon steel.
the strongest ferrite motor is when there is a single slug and a large diameter, as ferrite or "mud" motors develop more force from surface area, or something like that.
it's not necessarily going to be off on the magnetic center of the gap or gap geometry, per se, but the likelihood of it not being centered is better if there are multiple slugs involved.
the quality of the soft steel, makes a big difference as to how the lines of force "move" through the magnetic circuit, and the better the steel the more controlled you can engineer the flux modulation, or something like that.
it is my opinion that consumer grade speaker stuff is made with less than optimum steel, or magnet parts. You can get stronger magnets, but stronger might not be better depending on what properties you want.
stacking slugs is mostly just an easy way to create excursion clearance.
-
Re: What do y'all think of these for IB baffle duty?
From here on out please type "slugs" like that.
And a basket and magnet is not a motor any more than a cylinder block is not a motor without the pistons and head.
The VC, spider, etc is part of the motor, the cone attaches to it.

Ok now I'm looking at these for IB. Custom built @ $245 each.

This is with an aluminum coil. The ones I'll get will have a copper coil so that will lower the FS a bit and lower inductance.

Are they single or dual coil? WTF are you using for test leads? 100 foot extension cord?
Edit NVM, looked at the pic again... dual....
